Can You Go On A Cruise Ship With A Cold

Cruise ship illnesses could strike at your health

Guest sicknesses on the rise

By Monique Smith

HARBOR ISLAND -- Everyone knows you can get sick on a cruise, but new research shows just how common it is. A study published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine found that nearly one in five passengers on cruise ships experience some type of illness during their trip.

The most common illnesses are gastrointestinal, such as norovirus and E. coli. These illnesses can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Respiratory illnesses, such as the flu and pneumonia, are also common on cruise ships.

While most cruise ship illnesses are not serious, they can be unpleasant and ruin your vacation. If you do get sick on a cruise, it is important to see the ship's doctor as soon as possible. The doctor can diagnose your illness and recommend treatment.

There are a few things you can do to reduce your risk of getting sick on a cruise:

  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water.
  • Avoid touching your face.
  • Get vaccinated for common illnesses, such as the flu and pneumonia.
  • Bring hand sanitizer with you and use it often.
  • Avoid eating raw or undercooked food.
  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Get plenty of rest.

If you do get sick on a cruise, don't panic. Most illnesses are not serious and will resolve on their own within a few days. However, if your symptoms are severe or do not improve after a few days, it is important to see the ship's doctor.
