Machiavelli's Early Life

Early Life

Niccolò Machiavelli was born on May 3, 1469, in Florence, Italy.

Machiavelli was the son of a lawyer and a descendant of an old Florentine family. His father, Bernardo, was a successful lawyer and a member of the Florentine government.

Machiavelli's mother, Bartolomea di Stefano Nelli, was a devout Catholic.

Relatively little is known for certain about Machiavelli's early life

In comparison with many important figures of the Italian Renaissance, the following section is therefore largely speculative and is based on a combination of historical sources and educated guesses.

It is known that Machiavelli studied law at the University of Florence.

After graduating from law school, Machiavelli entered the service of the Florentine government.

He held a variety of positions in the government, including that of secretary to the Florentine Signoria.

In 1512, Machiavelli was exiled from Florence after the Medici family returned to power.
