Arizona Diamondbacks lose to the Tampa Bay Rays 5-4

The Arizona Diamondbacks lost to the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday, 5-4, in the first game of a three-game series at Chase Field. The Diamondbacks are now 52-60 on the season, while the Rays improve to 60-52.

Diamondbacks' pitching struggles

Arizona starter Zac Gallen allowed four runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out five. The Diamondbacks' bullpen wasn't much better, as they allowed another run in 3 2/3 innings of relief.

Rays' offense comes alive

The Rays' offense was led by Yandy Diaz, who went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Brandon Lowe also had a big game, going 2-for-4 with a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Up next

The Diamondbacks and Rays will play the second game of their series on Saturday at Chase Field. Arizona will start right-hander Merrill Kelly (11-5, 3.12 ERA), while Tampa Bay will send out left-hander Shane McClanahan (10-4, 2.20 ERA).
