A History of Bloodied, Broken Teeth: How BYU QB Jake Retzlaff Latched Onto the Cougars' Starting Job

Early Life and Career

Jake Retzlaff's journey to starting quarterback at BYU began in San Clemente, California, where he starred at San Clemente High School. As a senior, he threw for over 3,000 yards and 30 touchdowns, leading his team to the CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship game.

Retzlaff initially committed to play for the University of Utah, but later changed his mind and signed with BYU. He redshirted his first season in Provo and spent the next three years backing up Zach Wilson and Jaren Hall.

Rise to the Starting Role

Retzlaff's opportunity came in the 2023 season opener against USF. Hall suffered an ankle injury early in the game, thrusting Retzlaff into the starting role. He seized the moment, throwing for 257 yards and two touchdowns in a 50-21 victory.

Retzlaff continued to impress in his next two starts, leading BYU to wins over Weber State and Utah State. He threw for 483 yards and four touchdowns in the win over Utah State, earning Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Playing with a Bloody Tooth

Retzlaff's toughness was on full display in the game against Utah State. He took a hard hit in the third quarter that resulted in a broken tooth. Despite being bloodied and in pain, Retzlaff refused to leave the game.

With the crowd chanting his name, Retzlaff led BYU on a game-winning drive in the fourth quarter. He capped the drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Kody Epps, securing a 38-26 victory.

Continued Success

Retzlaff's performance against Utah State solidified his status as BYU's starting quarterback. In the games since, he has continued to excel, throwing for over 300 yards in each game and leading the Cougars to a 4-0 record.

Retzlaff's success is a testament to his hard work, determination, and toughness. He has overcome adversity and seized his opportunity to become one of the top quarterbacks in the Mountain West.
