Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen: Carried to win by offense

Gallen had a tough time, but the Diamondbacks scored 13 runs

Zac Gallen had a tough time on the mound, but the Diamondbacks' offense came to the rescue, scoring 13 runs in an 11-2 win over the Rockies on Saturday night in Phoenix.

Gallen allowed six hits and five runs in 4 1/3 innings, walking two and striking out three.

Christian Walker hit a two-run homer in the first inning and added a sacrifice fly in the third, and Ketel Marte had an RBI single in the second to give the Diamondbacks an early lead.

Diamondbacks' offense explodes

The Diamondbacks scored five runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run double by Pavin Smith and a two-run homer by Josh Rojas.

They added three more runs in the sixth on an RBI single by Nick Ahmed, a groundout by Walker, and a sacrifice fly by Marte.

Gallen was pulled from the game after allowing a leadoff single to Ryan McMahon in the fifth inning.

The Diamondbacks' bullpen did not allow a hit in the final 4 2/3 innings, with Ian Kennedy, Noe Ramirez, and J.B. Bukauskas combining to strike out seven batters.

Gallen's struggles

Gallen has not been the same pitcher since returning from the injured list on July 29. In his last four starts, he has a 7.71 ERA, allowing 22 hits and 14 runs in 17 1/3 innings.

Before going on the injured list, Gallen had a 2.53 ERA in 15 starts.

The Diamondbacks will need Gallen to return to form if they want to make a run at a playoff spot.

Offensive outburst

The Diamondbacks' offense has been one of the best in the league since the All-Star break, averaging 5.5 runs per game.

They are now 29-18 since the break, the best record in the National League.

The Diamondbacks are currently in third place in the NL West, 4 1/2 games behind the first-place Dodgers.
